Google just confirmed what everyone's been waiting to hear since May: Googlebook pre-orders open September 21 at 9 a.m. ET. That's four days from now, and the company still hasn't published final prices or shipping dates beyond "fall 2026."
What we do know is the floor. Googlebooks start at $999, putting them squarely in MacBook Air and Copilot Plus PC territory. This is not Chromebook pricing. Google is positioning these as flagship laptops that merge Android and ChromeOS into a single platform built around Gemini Intelligence, and the spec leaks bear that out. One Lenovo model spotted in certification filings packs 32GB of RAM — more memory than any Chromebook has ever shipped with.
The hardware comes from the usual suspects: Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Google confirmed Intel, Qualcomm, and MediaTek as silicon partners, so expect both Arm and x86 options in the first wave. The Lenovo variant weighs 1.29kg, carries a 70Wh battery rated for 11 hours, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, USB-A, HDMI 2.0, and a headphone jack. It also brings back the glowbar — that multi-color LED light strip from the 2013 Chromebook Pixel — this time mounted on the lid as a status indicator.
The software is where things get interesting. Magic Pointer turns the cursor into a live Gemini interface, letting you select anything on screen to ask, compare, or create with AI instantly. There's also Create My Widget for generative widgets, Cast My Apps for phone integration, and Quick Access shortcuts. Google is betting that the operating system era is over and the intelligence system era has arrived.
That's a bold claim when Microsoft and Apple are already deep into their own AI laptop pushes. The $999 starting price signals Google wants these devices judged against premium hardware, not education-tier Chromebooks. Whether that bet pays off depends on execution, and we won't know until units start shipping this fall.
