OpenAI Just Spent $300 Million on a Camera Company. What's It Building?

OpenAI doesn't make phones. It doesn't make cameras. But it just spent more than $300 million to acquire Glass Imaging, a Los Altos startup founded by two former Apple engineers who helped create Portrait Mode on the iPhone. The deal, reported by The Wall Street Journal last weekend, tripled Glass Imaging's 2025 valuation and marks the clearest signal yet that OpenAI's hardware ambitions are more than vaporware.

Glass Imaging builds AI-powered camera software that makes smartphone sensors punch above their weight. The company's GlassAI system uses neural networks trained on specific camera modules to improve image quality at the moment of capture, not as a post-processing trick. Where traditional camera pipelines handle noise reduction, sharpening, and color reconstruction as separate stages, Glass Imaging collapses it all into a single pass. The result, according to the company, is smartphone image quality that approaches what you'd get from a DSLR.

The founders, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, left Apple specifically to rethink smartphone cameras without being constrained by the iPhone's broader design priorities. That kind of clean-sheet thinking is exactly what you'd want if you were building a device from scratch.

And OpenAI is building a device from scratch. In 2025, the company paid $6.5 billion for io, the startup co-founded by CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive, Apple's former design chief. Ive now oversees consumer devices at OpenAI, and reports suggest the first product could be a screenless speaker priced around $300. But internal comments from Altman paint a far bigger picture: he's reportedly said the device could add $1 trillion to OpenAI's valuation.

That's not speaker money. That's something that fundamentally changes how people interact with AI in the physical world.

The Glass Imaging acquisition fills the most obvious gap. A device designed to act on what it sees needs exceptional computer vision. It needs cameras that work well in bad lighting, with small sensors, under power constraints. It needs capture tech optimized for AI inference, not Instagram filters. Glass Imaging has spent years solving exactly that problem.

What's still unclear is what form the device will take. Jony Ive described it in a 2025 video as a counterweight to the harmful effects of smartphones, which suggests something fundamentally different from just another phone. A wearable camera? An ambient assistant? Some kind of spatial computing play?

OpenAI hasn't confirmed the acquisition publicly, and Glass Imaging declined to comment. But at $300 million, this isn't a talent grab. It's a piece of critical infrastructure. The kind you buy when you're ready to ship.
