Amazon has completely redesigned its Kindle lineup, replacing raised bezels with flush, edge-to-edge screens across the Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft. This is the company's biggest hardware refresh in years, according to its own framing.
The core upgrade affects every model. All three now use what Amazon calls a "reverse stack" display design, which eliminates the physical step between the frame and the screen. The Kindle opens books 30 percent faster than its predecessor. The Colorsoft—Amazon's color e-reader—got a completely redesigned display with new nitride LEDs, micro-deflectors to reduce stray light, and an ultra-thin optical coating. Amazon claims this improves the color and brightness without sacrificing the paper-like feel.
Pricing starts at $149.99 for the 16GB base Kindle in Ube or Graphite. An aluminum-backed version with 32GB and no lock-screen ads costs $189.99. The Paperwhite starts at $199.99 (7-inch, water-resistant), while the Colorsoft begins at $289.99. The Colorsoft Signature Edition, which adds an aluminum back, 32GB storage, auto-adjusting light, and support for Amazon's new page-turning accessories, costs $319.99. Both the Colorsoft and a variant of the Paperwhite come in new colors: Graphite on the base model, plus Fig (a burgundy shade) on the Signature Edition.
Amazon is not raising prices compared to the previous generation—technically. But the company already raised prices in August, so these 2026 models cost the same as models that cost more than they did two years ago. The base Kindle, for example, launched at $110 in 2024 before jumping to $150.
Accessories are sold separately. A new Kindle Page-Turn Cover, which lets you flip pages without touching the screen, costs $80. An aluminum-backed Signature Edition model makes this cover compatible, whereas the base Paperwhite and standard Colorsoft do not support it.
The standard Kindle shipped immediately in select markets starting October 1. Paperwhite and Colorsoft preorders are now open, with both models shipping October 28. The Signature Editions and color options will arrive on the same date.
The Colorsoft's 7-inch color display keeps the same 300 ppi resolution for black-and-white text and 150 ppi for color. Battery life remains up to eight weeks across all three models. All are IPX8 water-resistant and support warm light and dark mode. For readers dealing with comics or graphic novels, the Colorsoft's color capability and the Signature Edition's 32GB storage matter more than for straight novels—illustrated books consume significantly more storage than text-only titles.
