CMF's Milk Carton Speakers Play Best When You Customize

Nothing's budget brand CMF launched its first speakers this week, and they look exactly like milk cartons—on purpose. The design choice isn't novelty for its own sake. It's actually the payoff to CMF's entire design philosophy: let the user control what the thing looks like.

The lineup comes in two sizes. The CMF Speaker S is the compact option at 334g, designed with a carabiner hook for portability. It pairs a 45mm driver with two passive radiators for 10W of output. The CMF Speaker M is the larger model at 604g, built with a carry handle and serious performance: a 70mm woofer and 16mm tweeter combining for 35W RMS. Both claim 18 hours of battery life at 50% volume with Ultra Bass enabled.

The real story isn't the specs or the carton shape—it's the modularity. Both speakers have removable front panels and swappable knobs in contrasting colors. CMF isn't selling extra panels separately, but the company standardized the designs so you can 3D print your own. Four color options ship standard: white, dark grey, orange, and turquoise. This actually changes how the product feels. It moves from "a speaker you buy" to "a speaker you personalize."

Features-wise, both models pack Bluetooth 6.0, NFC tap-to-pair, Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair, and dual-device connectivity so one speaker stays linked to two sources at once. USB-C audio is built in. The software side includes adaptive EQ tuning (continuously analyzes and optimizes output in real-time), an Ultra Bass mode, a Wide Soundstage mode, and four custom EQ presets available through the Nothing X app. Both speakers also support Auracast, which means you can link them to other Auracast speakers—even from different brands—for synchronized playback.

The CMF Speaker S costs $59. The CMF Speaker M is $109. For that price, the specs are solid. The durability is there too: both carry IP68 dust and water ratings, meaning they'll survive a submersion to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. A 10-minute charge nets you an hour of listening.

The design deliberately references a 1915 gable-top milk carton, complete with the peaked roof and sharp geometric folds. The Speaker S includes an angled top with the carabiner. The Speaker M adds a full handle through the crown. It's playing design language most people won't consciously notice, but it works because it signals something true: CMF builds for you to own, not just to use. In a market where most wireless speakers try to disappear into a room, these lean into being objects. You can change them. You can print pieces for them. That control is worth mentioning at these prices.

Both are available today on Nothing's website and select retailers in white, dark grey, orange, and turquoise.
