HomePod mini 2 Costs $149. Siri AI Isn't Here Yet.

The most telling line in Apple's [HomePod mini 2](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=HomePod+mini+2&tag=techtreck02-20) launch is the one in the spec table: Siri AI, "arriving later." The speaker goes on sale October 30. The feature it's marketed around doesn't ship with it.

That's the catch. Here's the rest of the picture.

What you get for $149

Apple announced the HomePod mini 2 on October 13. It's the first major update to the little speaker since the original arrived in November 2020. Pre-orders are open, and Apple says it lands October 30 in the U.S. and more than 23 other countries and regions. It comes in pink, green, blue, white and midnight, with color-matched woven power cables.

Inside is the Apple S10 chip, which handles computational audio that tunes dynamic range and loudness in real time. Connectivity moves up to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6, plus Thread and an Ultra Wideband chip. Bring a compatible iPhone close and music hands off to the speaker. It can also be the default audio output for Macs with Wi-Fi 6E or later, as a single speaker or a stereo pair. It still works as a home hub, and it can listen for smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and send an alert.

Apple's own product copy talks about the speaker being "compact," and the specs back that up. This is still one full-range driver with dual passive radiators. Macworld says the biggest improvements are in software, audio capabilities and wireless connectivity, not the physical design.

The price creep

The original HomePod mini launched at $99. Apple raised it to $129 in June 2026, then to $149 with this model. That's a 50% jump over five years for a speaker that looks about the same. In the UK it's £129.

The surround sound option adds up fast, too. Four-speaker home theater needs an Apple TV 4K, and four HomePod mini 2 units alone come to $596 before you've paid for the box.

Who should buy it

If you're deep in Apple's world, own a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E, and want a small speaker for a desk or kitchen, this is a sensible buy. The Mac speaker feature is a real reason to pick it over a generic Bluetooth speaker. If you have a big room, look at the $349 HomePod instead. A mini isn't built to fill it.

If you're buying mainly for Siri AI, wait. Without a compatible iPhone or iPad, the speaker still handles general knowledge, conversation and music discovery. But the personal-context features need that pairing, and the software isn't here at launch. Paying $149 now for a promise is the part I'd skip.

What to watch

Gear Patrol reports Costco is already selling the speaker below retail, so check there before paying Apple's price. I haven't seen a confirmed Costco price, so verify it yourself. Also watch for the Siri AI rollout date. Once it's live and people have used it on the speaker, you'll know whether the wait was worth it.
