Within about half an hour of preorders opening on October 16, Macworld's U.S. tracking showed delivery estimates for the iPhone Duo slipping to January 25, 2027. The phone goes on sale October 23. If you didn't order in that first window, you're probably buying a 2027 phone.
That's the practical story. The rest is what you'd be waiting for.
What it is
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, and it's book-style. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner one. Apple says it's the largest iPhone screen ever. It's about 5.2mm thick unfolded, 11.3mm folded, and weighs 254 grams. Inside is the A20 Pro chip with 12GB of RAM, and the battery is 4,883 mAh split across two cells. Apple's numbers: up to 44 hours of video on the outer display, 31 on the inner, and 24 mixed. It reaches 50% in roughly 20 minutes on a 60W wired adapter.
What it costs
It starts at $1,999 for 256GB. The 512GB model is $2,199, 1TB is $2,599, and 2TB is $3,199. Colors are Star White and Night Sky. Apple's own financing works out to $83.29 a month over 24 months for the base model. Cases are extra: the iPhone Duo Case is $79, and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is $129.
What you give up
This is where I'd slow down. AT&T's listing spells out the tradeoffs against the iPhone 18 Pro models: no Face ID, no telephoto lens, a $700 higher starting price, and a later ship date. Touch ID returns, built into the side button. The cameras are a 48MP main, a 48MP ultra wide and a 12MP outer camera, so there's no zoom lens at all.
Who should care
My view: buy it only if you want a small phone and a tablet in one pocket and you're fine paying a $700 premium for the format. It makes sense for people who read, work or watch video on their phone all day. It makes much less sense if you mostly take photos. A cheaper Pro does the camera job better and arrives sooner.
Early reviews are positive. Engadget calls it a treat for iPhone users unwilling to switch to Android, though heavy and expensive. That fits the spec sheet. I haven't handled one, so I'm not adding my own verdict on the hinge or the crease.
What to do now
If you want one, order now rather than waiting for reviews to settle. Apple is still taking orders, but the queue only grows. Check your carrier's trade-in math before you commit, because AT&T's pricing page lists far lower monthly costs with an eligible trade-in. A second wave of 28 more countries and regions launches October 30. And don't forget that a $79 to $129 case is a real part of the total.
If you can wait, wait. Foldables tend to get thinner, lighter and cheaper over time, and Apple has never been shy about iterating.
