iFixit swapped the mainboard from an HTC U24 Pro into a Trump Mobile T1, and the phone booted up with an HTC logo. That's about as clear as a teardown verdict gets.
The Trump Mobile T1 was announced in June 2025 at $499. Per iFixit's teardown, coverage of it, and a report published today, it's a near-exact match for HTC's 2024 midrange phone. The layout of the motherboard, cameras and cooling closely matches. The specs line up too: a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen at 120Hz and a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip.
What's actually different
Not much, and some of it is a step backward. The T1 has a bigger battery, 5,000mAh against the HTC's 4,600mAh. One report lists the cells as 19.35Wh versus 17.23Wh. But the T1 tops out at 30W charging, while the U24 Pro does 60W. Then there's the finish. The T1 is gold, or in Bloomberg's reviewer's words, more mustard yellow than gold. The teardown also found most components come from China, which sits awkwardly next to the "Made in USA" pitch.
The price keeps moving
This is the part to watch. The $499 figure was described as an "introductory price" back in the spring. A report published today says the T1 now costs $749. I only found that figure in one source, so check Trump Mobile's own site before you assume it. If it's right, that's $250 more for a phone whose twin has been sold elsewhere for less. One earlier report listed the HTC U24 Pro at roughly $470 for 128GB and $557 for 512GB. Those prices are months old, so treat them as a ballpark.
The service side is a mixed bag too. Trump Mobile is an MVNO running on T-Mobile's network, with a $47.45 monthly plan, Truth Social preinstalled, and no account-management app. Live support runs 8 AM to 11 PM Central. The Next Web also says the phone is stuck on old security patches, and that Bloomberg's verdict was not to buy it. I haven't verified that patch claim myself.
My take
Skip the Trump Mobile T1 unless you want it as a souvenir, which is a perfectly legitimate reason to spend money. As a phone, it's a 2024 midranger with slower charging and a markup. If you like the hardware, the HTC U24 Pro is the honest version of the same thing. Better yet, compare it against current midrange phones from Samsung, Google or Xiaomi at the same price. They'll likely have newer chips and longer update promises. That's my inference, not something the teardowns tested.
If you've already preordered, read the refund terms and confirm the final price before your card gets charged. If the price is $749, you may be paying flagship money for a 2024 phone.
My take
This one surprised me. Last year Trump threatened a 25% tariff on Apple, Samsung and any company selling smartphones in the US that weren’t built here, and his administration has taken a hard line on China the whole time. So seeing this discovery is not what I expected. I’ll be watching whether it lasts, and whether it changes what phones end up costing us.
